Message from President McBride
It is an honor to lead The New School, our bold university, steeped in history yet always looking forward in a world of constant change. I am inspired by this community of rigorous teaching and learning, collaborative problem solving, and unbridled creativity. Those are values that resonate with me, my own life experiences, and much of my research and scholarship.
I am fueled by the energy I have witnessed across every part of the university. It is your energy that actively anticipates and embraces change while being confidently and firmly grounded in our humanity. There is a fundamental optimism at The New School, and it is from that place of optimism that I approach my responsibility as your president.
I humbly accepted the honor of becoming The New School’s president in the fall of 2019. By the time of my arrival in April 2020, the world had dramatically changed. The months and years ahead will require us to grapple with new and unprecedented challenges. What we can rely on is this: The New School will continue to evolve and to be a leader in higher education. We remain steadfastly committed to providing an excellent and unparalleled academic home for our students, faculty, and alumni, and across all of our programs and activities, we remain connected and bound by our orientation to the New.
On behalf of the administrative team in the Office of the President and the entire university leadership team, I convey our commitment to being responsive and to working in ways that advance collaboration, innovation, and openness. These approaches inform what we teach and learn and how we lead.
The New School is a community built every day by both the small moments and large efforts of every person who chooses to teach, learn, create, work, and contribute here. We are all part of The New School’s present moment, and we have a stake in its future.
I am thrilled at the opportunity to lead this vibrant university community, and I look forward to creating that future with all of you.
