Countdown to Commencement
Countdown to Commencement is a time to celebrate the many accomplishments of our graduating students and to help them prepare for their successful transition into The New School's alumni community.
Students whose degrees are conferred in December 2022, May 2023, and August 2023 are invited to to celebrate this important milestone with their family and friends, explore their post-graduation opportunities, and show their New School spirit. Visit the Countdown to Commencement webpage.
Academic Regalia
The Academic Costume, more commonly known as your cap and gown, is designed to suggest a unified experience. At The New School, undergraduate students wear red gowns, master's students wear black gowns, and doctoral students wear black specialty gowns.
All New School caps are black.
Ordering Your Cap & Gown
To order your cap and gown, you must first apply for graduation. Once you have been approved to graduate, you will gain access to the Graduation Portal at my.newschool.edu under the Academics tab. Support Future Grads and Be Part of the Inaugural Graduating Student Gift!
Congratulations on your graduation! We hope you will take a moment to celebrate your accomplishments and pay it forward to future classes of New Schoolers by making a gift to the Student
Emergency Fund or the Annual Fund for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice (EISJ).
No matter which fund you choose, your contribution will directly affect the experiences of current and future New School students.
Why give?
- To show your Narwhal pride and care for your classmates. Gifts in any amount truly make a difference in by providing funds to students.
- To be a part of something bigger than yourself. You may think that a gift of $23 or less couldn’t possibly make a difference, but what if everyone in your group of friends teamed up to show their support for the Student Emergency Fund? What if every
student in your class made a gift of $10 to EISJ that helped launch new support services? When combined with the donations of the entire class, your gift will make a tremendous difference.
- To pave the way for future Narwhals. Donations alumni have made through the years have helped support opportunities for students at The New School. Now it’s graduates' turn to continue the tradition and provide resources for future students.
Graduating student gift participants are eligible to receive a philanthropy cord*, to be worn with their cap and gown at Commencement to demonstrate their support for the next class of New Schoolers. These cords will be available for pick-up in the UC
on several days in the leadup to Commencement. Details will be provided to all donors.
Be sure to keep an eye out for Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving Programs staff at upcoming Commencement Countdown Events to make your gift in person and learn more about the benefits available to you as a New School alum.
*If you are unable to make a donation but wish to receive a philanthropy cord, please contact [email protected].
