Recent Updates: The university is welcoming back visitors to campus. More information can be found on our COVID-19 Community Guide.

  • With our comprehensive health and safety measures in place, we look forward to robust predominantly in-person teaching and learning in Spring 2022 for students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Our classroom instruction and other in-person curricular experiences will address safety protocols, health services, and support plans to minimize the risks posed by COVID-19 at the university. We will continue to closely follow guidelines from the City and State of New York and will ensure a rigorous, relevant, and uniquely New School experience for every one of our students.

    Spring 2022 Teaching and Learning

Remote Start to Spring 2022. The university is making several adjustments for the start of the semester to allow for a careful return to campus, including two weeks of remote instruction, increased entry testing, and the previously announced booster requirement. These changes, along with our high vaccination rate, mask requirement, and commitment to caring for our community, will help bring us back together safely in person as soon as possible and minimize disruption to the semester.

Starting January 24, all classes will begin online. In-person instruction will resume on February 7.

Campus is open. While classes are meeting online for two weeks, we encourage all to come to campus to take advantage of on-campus resources.

Beginning February 7, the vast majority of course offerings will be in-person. Most classes designed for in-person instruction are expected to be held face-to-face with faculty teaching on campus, and classrooms will operate at or near their normal capacities. Study and rehearsal spaces, libraries, the Making Center, specialized equipment, workshops, and instruments will be available to students. Our Spring 2022 FAQs address additional details of how our community will be living, learning, and experiencing the coming academic year.

Students who have an approved accommodation through Student Disability Services.
Students who have a documented disability that may prevent them from attending classes in person should contact Student Disability Services.

For this semester, with hopes to be able to revisit as health and safety guidance allows, we will continue wearing masks for all on campus activities. In areas where unmasking is needed to support the specific pedagogy of a course (i.e. music, theatre, and dance performance), additional health and safety protocols will be in place to support unmasking in specific situations. More specific details will be shared with students and faculty in these courses in January.

We anticipate and are planning to expand guest access as soon as mid February to support pedagogical activities should health and safety conditions allow. Faculty should plan for guests to join class virtually through at least early February. We will confirm in January when guests can begin to join in person.

Course-related events that require student participation as part of the course may be held in-person pending approval of the request and availability of space on campus.

Students with general questions about their fall academic plans should contact Academic Advising.
