• The New School participates in two federal grant programs, which are available for students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs only.

The Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs promote broader access to college education by providing need-based financial aid to low-income undergraduate students. Eligibility is determined by the U.S. Department of Education using a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the financial information reported on the FAFSA.

Unlike federal loans, federal grants do not have to be repaid. Grants are credited to students' accounts, with the annual award being divided equally between the fall and the spring semesters.

    Pell Grant

The amount of an eligible student's grant will depend on their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA, their Cost of Attendance as determined by The New School, their status as a full-time or part-time student, and whether they plan to attend school for a full academic year or less. The amount of a Pell Grant is subject to change each award year and depends in part on funding of the program by Congress. The maximum Pell Grant award for the 2019–2020 award year is $6,195.

    Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a grant that supplements Pell Grant aid for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant recipients whose EFC is zero are considered first for an FSEOG.

Students can receive an FSEOG of up to $500 a year. The amount depends on when they submit the FAFSA, their financial need, The New School's institutional award policies, and the availability of funds.
