  • 20-21 Academic Plan

  • With the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and neighbors as our highest priority, Parsons has developed a plan for the 2020-2021 academic year that ensures students benefit from an educational experience that is true to Parsons’ mission and values, and that supports their potential to respond to this current moment as creative problem solvers and critical thinkers. We are dedicated to ensuring that the physical, intellectual, and emotional aspects of your practice continue to grow, and are fully supported both in and outside of the curriculum.

Our plans for the coming academic year follow the public health guidelines from the City and State of New York to ensure the health and safety of our community.

    Fall 2021: Safe Campus Reopening

The New School is planning for a robust in‑person student experience both inside and outside the classroom starting in fall 2021 and beyond. Our goal is to re-open our New York City campus in fall 2021 for a return to in-person teaching and learning in undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

    The 2020-2021 Academic Experience

    Spring 2021

Given the continued prevalence and changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, in New York City, the United States, and the world, we are following local public health recommendations to ensure the health and safety of our community. These are guiding the university-level decisions about the spring semester.

    • In alignment with the university’s 2020-2021 academic plans, nearly all spring 2021 classes continue to be taught online.
    • Students who choose to or need to enroll in a hybrid option take nearly all courses online and take a hybrid course, offered university-wide. This course combines online learning with an in-person component, in which students attend one on-campus small-group instructional offering in compliance with social distancing guidelines.
    • Campus access is currently available for all Parsons students who have submitted the required testing documentation for individualized project work. Making Center access (for tools and equipment) is currently available to all Parsons students who have completed required orientations and are already authorized to use equipment. Students can reserve blocks of time (up to 6 or 12 hours depending on the space) to work on their projects on campus. Equipment rentals for off-campus use are also available. Students may submit work digitally to be produced for pickup in select labs and shops (e.g., printing services at the Design Lab, Durst Digital C-printing, 3D, laser cutting, CNC, and kiln firing). In order to allow for greater access, we are exploring new online orientations for select labs and shops in the Making Center, as well as additional submission-based pickups. Safety guidelines will remain in effect for the spring.

    Fall 2020

    • All classes were taught online in fall 2020.
    • Our Global Offsite Semester opportunities build on partnerships with a number of universities overseas and open new opportunities at Parsons Paris to provide access to creative and making spaces for many of our international students. Learn more below. The university facilitated limited access to the Making Center and other on-campus spaces for task time in fall 2020.

    Tuition Fees

For the 2020-2021 academic year, all students will pay no more than the equivalent of two full-time semesters, no matter what the sequence of their course of study. More information on tuition is available here.

    Global Offsite Semester Option

The New School has developed an innovative program that enables new first-year students outside of the United States to start the academic year in their home country. This offering is based on relationships with international partner institutions and will allow students to access space resources and/or courses with the partner in addition to online courses with The New School.

    University Housing

Residence halls will continue to be available on a limited basis. After opening our residence halls on a very limited basis during the fall semester, we plan to expand access and capacity in spring, while still taking all necessary steps to meet required social distancing guidelines. Housing will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

For social distancing measures, we will assign each student to a single bedroom, but a suite with multiple bedrooms may accommodate multiple students. Additionally, to help ease the financial burden of students who choose to live in university housing in spring 2021, we have lowered the housing rates and fees.

Please visit the University Housing page for more information.
