  • COVID-19 Update

For the safety of our community and to comply with social distancing guidelines, the Recreation department will not be offering sports, on-campus fitness classes, access to gyms, or outdoor adventures during the 2020-2021 academic year. Students can visit NarwhalNation and read Student Leadership and Involvement's weekly email newsletter to learn more about upcoming activities.

New School Recreation offers students opportunities to take part in physical exercise and sports while meeting new people, enjoying social interaction, and building community. We design programs and activities for students at all levels of experience, ability, knowledge, and interest. We also help our student staff members develop leadership and professional abilities.

    Our Goals

    • Promote mental and physical fitness
    • Strengthen campus community
    • Build leadership skills

Throughout the academic year, the department hosts weekly group fitness programs, intramural team sports, outdoor activities, and special events. In addition, The New School offers competitive athletic teams in basketball, cross-country track, tennis, and soccer. Through participation in recreational activities and intramural and interscholastic sports, students develop valuable skills in areas such as teamwork, time management, and networking. (Note: Many events are also open to New School faculty and staff.)

    Programs We Offer

    • Club sports (soccer, basketball, cross-country track, tennis)
    • Group fitness classes (yoga, Pilates, Zumba, dance, and others)
    • Outdoor adventure activities (hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and others)
    • Intramural sports (organized team sports)
    • Gear rentals that allow you to plan your own outdoor adventures without breaking the bank
    • The New School Adventure Fund to cover full or partial trip registrations
    • Bike room on campus where you can store your bike for free when you register.
    • Gnarls request: Want our beloved mascot at your event? Fill out the Gnarls Request Form.

We're also interested in suggestions for activities and collaborations with other groups; please contact us with your ideas.

To sign up for programs, events, and teams, students must be enrolled in a New School degree program and present a valid newcard (university ID) and proof of health insurance coverage.
